Support ARISTO Digitizer

On this page we will answer your most frequently asked questions regarding to the ARISTO Digitizer.

Driver for ARISTO Digitizer Products

The driver "Virtual Tablet Interface™" by Digitizer Technology Company, LLC is supporting the ARISTO digitizer product lines

ARISTOhiGRID

ARISTOproGRID

ARISTOGRID (AG200-Standard)

ARISTOTAB

This driver only supports 16-keys on the 25-key cursor.
With AG200-standard the driver only works correctly with EPROM version 3.0 or higher.
To receive the correct version please contact ARISTO.

The driver is available as a single-user license from the american license owner Digitizer Technology Company, LLC. More information is available at his home page.
ARISTO is not able to deliver the old digitizer driver any more.

Windows NT

Use driver V5.44 to run all ARISTO digitizers under Windows NT4 Workstation. (The driver is not suitable for Windows NT4 Server).
We strongly recommend to note the hints in the help file aristont.hlp (D) or aristo_e.hlp (E,US) which is included in the driver download file.
The help file will be displayed during driver installation and is, of course, accessible afterwards. It contains instructions regarding PC configuration, serial data cable and digitizer.

There are no known items regarding certain NT4 Service Packs.

Digitizer not working after restart

If a problem occurs, make sure not to use a PS/2 Wheel Mouse together with the dedicated driver. Use the Standard Microsoft PS/2 Mouse Driver included in Windows NT instead.

In the "Wintab Control Panel", icon "Customization", make sure to have the "Tracking Mode" set to "Absolute" rather than to "Relative". As the driver does not support Relative Mode, mouse pointer would appear frozen to a random position.

Driver Version 5.42

After de-installing digitizer driver V. 5.42 possibly all pointing devices including the mouse are without function. To replace driver V. 5.42 simply install V5.44 over.

Windows 95 / 98

Message "Error copying file \....\ agsmouse.inf"

The driver for W95/98 must be installed from a diskette drive.
Run the downloaded selfextracting "exe" file anywhere to unpack. As the destination directory, choose an empty directory on your harddisk. After that, copy all unpacked files and directories to an empty 1.44MB diskette and run setup.exe from there.

Do not use the Hardware Manager or Control Panel/Software to install the driver. After installation, prior to a restart, remove all mice (even PS/2) from the system.

Testing Hardware Functionality

If in doubt about hardware functionality (digitizer, serial data link cable or PC-interface) you may wish to run a low-level functionality- and connection-test with the digitizer. To do so, run the test utility ardi.exe (PDF file, 37kB) . However, this is only possible in a real DOS environment. Test utility does not run properly in a DOS-box of Win95/98 and does not (only in very rare, unpredictable cases) in a DOS-Box of Win NT4.

The programm tries to connect to the tablet and displays interface parameters, coordinates and keycodes. Execution may take one or two minutes. the program will neither modify any tablet nor PC settings. Please start the PC under DOS (use a boot diskette for NT), or in the "DOS Only" Mode (W95/98, press F8 while Windows start message appears).

ARISTOhiGRID / ARISTOproGRID

Hardware Settings
To modify the ARISTOhiGRID hardware settings, you will need to use the green-white, plastic  A4-sheet "ARISTOhiGRID Setup" which has been shipped together with the digitzer. If meanwhile lost, you may download it here as an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) file and print it out in scale 1:1. Before printing, deactivate any print options that might modify the picture size. Anyway, if you don't use the original sheet (e.g.print, fax or copy) make sure the two fiducials top left and top right of the sheet have a distance of 270mm ± 2mm.

Executing Setup Mode:

  1. Fasten the "ARISTOhiGRID Setup" anywhere, but inside the working area with some tape.
  2. Switch off the ARISTOhiGRID. Take the sensor in your hand. Keep any of the sensor keys pressed down as you switch the ARISTOhiGRID on. You may release the sensor key now.
  3. Put the crosshair over both the fiducials left and right in any order, and press a key. There should be a short beep. If the second fiducial beeps longer, start again with first fiducial and make sure the sheet is completely inside the digitizer's working area.
  4. The red sensor LED will now indicate active and inactive menu fields. Make your changes by simply clicking on the respective fields. The settings are immediately stored as you select them, no separate storing process is required when finished.
  5. Click on "Exit Menü/Reset" to exit Setup.

Standard Settings for all ARISTO Drivers:

  1. The most convenient way to get the standard settings is to select the field A8 "Factory Setup" in the "Menu" area top left. Please note that this resets/deletes all four configurations CONF1...CONF4.
  2. If you want to preserve the other configurations, first select one of the configurations CONF1...CONF4. Then, switch ! "on" all   fields highlighted in green, and, if necessary, de-select the not highligted fields.

Standard Settings "Summagraphics Microgrid" Digitizer:

Coming from the "factory settings" (all fields highligted in a light green are ON), please activate the fields:
     - D4      (Microgrid)
     - I1       (7-even-2)
     - D21    (Idle/Remote)
     - D26    (Binary Format)

ARISTOGRID (AG200)

ARISTO Drivers with Legacy Digitizers ARISTOGRID

To run a legacy ARISTOGRID Digitizer together with ARISTO drivers, please make sure you have an AG200 Standard Electronics Box and Firmware inside that runs ARISTO Remote Mode. If you have one of the (rare) AG200 Special Versions, you will not be able to run the digitizer together with ARISTO drivers.

To find out, unplug the power cord from mains and remove the AG200 electronics box top cover. On the printed circuit board, there are one or two EPROM chips located near the two grey flat ribbon cables. The chips are usually labelled with a version number. Firmware version must be V1.4, V2.0 or V3.x. There must be two sockets at positions P4 and P5, independent from whether or not there are two chips. If there is only one socket, this electronics box cannot be used together with ARISTO (or any other known) drivers.

To set up AG200 electronics dip switches to ARISTO Remote (factory settings, required for all ARISTO drivers) please look here (PDF file, 4 pages).

ARISTOGRIDs emulating Summagraphics® Microgrid® Mode

Some 3rd party drivers need the digitizer to work in Summagraphics® Microgrid® Mode. This quasi-standard is sometimes also referred to as "Summagrid®" or "UIOF" format.

To run Summagraphics® Microgrid® Mode, the firmware inside the AG200-elektronics box must be version V3.0 or higher (latest version is V3.3). Before ordering a firmware update, make sure your AG200 electronics board has two sockets for memory chips at positions P4 and P5. Firmware update to version V3.3 (two chips) is available at our ARISTO Service Center.

To set up Microgrid® Mode, all DIP switch settings of the AG200 (inside and outside) must be set correctly. Please find additional information on how to update firmware and how to set DIP switches here (PDF file, 4 pages).

Former Digitizer Names Cross Reference

Since 1988, different digitizer type identifiers have been used. Please find your digitizer type identifier in form of a label or alu-plate on the bottom side of the digitizer table (there is no identifier on the electronics box). Refer to the table to find the current identifierers offered e.g. in driver setup routines.

In case there is no label at all, you can find out the type of digitizer by measuring the digitizing area (four drilled points at the edges of the working area surface).

GeoMouse not recognized on boot

In rare cases the GeoMouse will not be initialized by the driver when booting Windows. Put the GeoMouse beside the tablett when booting, this should help.

Pen Tip Switch does not work

The pen jack in front of the GeoMouse is, specially when new, very tight. The tip will only work, if the plug is fully inserted in the jack. Use more force than you would have expected.

AutoCAD, all Versions

ARISTO Driver

Install the ARISTO driver for Windows 95/98 or for Windows NT4. This can be done before or after installation of AutoCAD. The ARISTO Driver includes the WINTAB Interface.

AutoCAD Driver

AutoCAD 14 contains own digitizer drivers, amongst others for the operating modes "Summasketch MM" and "Microgrid" to use as an alternative to the ARISTO drivers. Please refer to the various digitizers which mode can be used. Together with GeoMouse and CollegeMouse procucts, the AutoCAD drivers are unsuitable.

AutoCAD LT-versions and AutoCAD 2000 do not offer these built-in drivers.

Other Drivers (3rd Party Driver)

You might wish to use WINTAB-digitizer drivers of other manufacturers. This is possible for most of our digitizers as they emulate digitizers of other manufacturers, e.g. Summagraphics Microgrid, Summagraphics (Summasketch) MM or Calcomp 9100/9500. Please refer to the corresponding ARISTO digitizer specs which mode might be used. Configure the ARISTO digitizer respectively.
(Together with GeoMouse and CollegeMouse procucts, these drivers cannot be used).

Knopfmenus / Button Menus

WINTAB has priority over the AutoCAD button menus (executing AutoCAD functions with sensor keys). If you wish to use these button codes, you will have to release the corresponding sensor buttons in the WINTAB environment. This happens in the "WINTAB Control Panel" ("Start" - "Programs" - "ARISTO" - "Wintab Control Panel"). Under "Customization", uncheck the box "Default" in the "Button Assignments" area and assign all buttons you want to use to the "none" function.

The assignment to AutoCAD functions itself is done by editing Autocad "MNU" files and descibed there.
